Building on the Edge

Scripture:

  • 1 Kings 8:22-30 Solomon's dedication
  • Psalm 122 To the house of the Lord
  • Matthew 7:24-29 A house built on rock

Sermon:

Building on the Edge
This Sunday, we launch a full year of celebration of the 100th anniversary of the building which houses Robertson-Wesley. At the time, this beautiful building was on the edge of the city: in the place of growth and promise. Throughout the years, it has housed a faith community that has continued to be "on the edge" in many different ways and remains so today, as we build on foundations that have been laid by so may throughout the years.

Banquet of Life

Scripture:

  • Isaiah 62:1-5
    A crown of beauty
  • Psalm 36:5-10
    Fountain of life
  • John 2:1-11
    Wedding at Cana

Sermon:

Banquet of Life
According to John's version of the gospel, Jesus ministry begins with a wedding that has run out of wine. The Psalmist speaks of feasting on the abundance of God's house. The prophet speaks of the bridegroom rejoicing over the bride. Life seems to lose its joy and beauty at times, but in this new-born presence of God in Christ the wine is replenished and the celebration proceeds.

Filled with expectation and questions

Isaiah 43:1-7 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you.
Psalm 29 Ascribe to God glory and strength.
Luke 3:15-17, 21-22 Jesus is baptized by John

As we hear the story of Jesus being baptized by John the Baptist, we pause to reflect on our own understanding of baptism, and what it means. When entering a faith community we contemplate what it will mean to belong, what will be required of us, will we be welcomed and accepted? The good news is that God who has created us and formed us, believes that we are all precious in God's sight, and God has called us each by name. What do you hear when God calls you by name?

Mystery revealed through the spirit of generosity.

Isaiah 60: 1-6 Arise, Shine; for your light has come.
Ephesians 3:1-12 Boldness and confidence through faith.
Matthew 2:1-12 The visit of the Magi

It is often said that a mystery is a puzzle to be solved, but for the Ephesians a mystery is a treasure to be revealed. What is revealed to us in the story of the visit from the Magi. What does their generosity reveal to us this day? How might their generosity inspire us for the New Year?
