The eyes are the window of the soul

Genesis 15:1-12, 17-18 God seals the covenant with Abram and Sarai
Philippians 3:17-4:1 My dear friends, my joy, my crown, hold firm in God.
Luke 13:31-35 Jesus cries over Jerusalem as a hen over her chicks.

For some, the eyes are the first place we look to discover
whether or not you can trust someone. To gaze deep into
the eyes of another is an intimate act that connects people
on a different level. Abram was faced with a choice to trust
in God, Paul challenged the Philippians to trust in him and
follow his example of how we should love and treat each
other. The scriptures call us to look deep within and reflect
on what it means to live as children of God in this world.
When we look into the mirror with our own eyes we are
looking into the eyes of God. What do we see?

The window into the wilderness

Deuteronomy 26:1-11 My father was a wondering Aramean.
Psalm 91: 1-2, 9-16 I will raise you up on eagle's wings.
Luke 4:1-13 Jesus tested in the desert.

As we begin the season of lent we are invited to enter a ritual of deep contemplation and reflection by looking into a mirror, and by looking through the window at the reality in which we live. We will begin to contemplate the question, "In what ways have we experienced the wilderness and where have we experienced God's faithfulness in the wilderness?" Like Jesus we are tempted, tempted to go back to what is familiar, back to our old ways. We want to acknowledge and honour our past, but in the wilderness we are on a journey to the future. When we look through the window what do we see?

Eternal Light

  • Exodus 34:29-35 Shining face of Moses
  • Luke 9:28-36 Jesus with Moses and Elijah
  • 2 Corinthians 3:12-4:2 Lifting the veil of the mind

Eternal Light
Christ-light, shining on the mountain-top, in the midst of prayer, viewed through eyes struggling to stay awake -- ancestors of the faith bearing witness, words of God speaking from a cloud. This moment reveals who Jesus truly is, and in light of this revelation, we have an opportunity to see who we truly are. "In your light we see light" -- and in your loving wisdom, we know ourselves as if for the first time.
