You CAN handle the truth!

Psalm 8 (VU pp. 730-732) How glorious is God's name.
Romans 5:1-5 Suffering-endurance-character-hope
John 16: 12-15 The Spirit of truth.

The writings from both Paul and John help us to explore the nature of our relationship with God, with Jesus and with the Holy Spirit - the trinity. Life is never easy, but today Paul tells us that we should boast in our suffering. John reminds us that Jesus warned the disciples that they may not be able to bear all the things he told them, but now is the time for us to bear the truth, to live out this truth so that we will come to receive the peace of God which is freely given to us. listen

Scripture:

  • Acts 1:1-11 The Ascension
  • Ephesians 1:15-23 Wisdom and revelation
  • Luke 24:44-53 The ascension

Sermon:

The End and the Beginning
The stories of the Ascension make the bridge from the Jesus of Nazareth, bodily present on the earth, to the Living Christ, present to us in the Holy Spirit. In profound ways, it is both an ending and a beginning. What is it that ends for you in Jesus' departure; and what begins for you in the power of his reign?

Creating and discerning sacred space in the city.

Acts 16:9-15 Paul worships with Lydia and the women by the river.
Psalm 67 Let the light of God's face shine upon us.
Revelation 21:10, 22-22:5 John's vision of the city of God.

Today we hear the story of Lydia, a business woman who is discerning and decisive; a woman who opens her heart to God and gives all that she has and all that she is to the Christian movement. Here is a woman who is on the leading edge of God's mission in the world, a new vision of the mission field. We will explore and discern what vision God is sharing with us today and where and how we can make space for the sacred in the city. How will Lydia inspire each one of us through her faithful witness?
