There's a time for everything

Jeremiah 1:4-10 The call of Jeremiah: "But I'm only a boy!"
Psalm 71:1-6 (VU pp. 789 Part 1) A mighty fortress, a sheltering rock is God
Luke 13:10-17 Jesus shakes things up by healing the bent-over woman.

The scriptures for this Sunday remind us that it's not always about following the rules, it's about doing what is right. When God's prophets speak we must be prepared to be rocked, to be shaken, to feel uncomfortable. Yet, as faithful followers we are assured that we are standing on holy ground; we have God's steadfast love and divine presence to hold us up and to comfort and protect us. There is a time to pluck up and a time to build, a time to break down and a time to mend. Where are we being called to break the rules?

Firing up the masses!

Isaiah 5:1-7 The unfruitful vineyard will be purged.
Hebrews 11:29-12:2 The great cloud of witnesses who lived by faith.
Luke 12:49-56 Jesus comes to bring fire and division within households.

The assurance that we hold onto today is that nothing separates us from the love of God. This oracle from Isaiah is one that stirs us, that causes us to question and explore what it is that God expects us to do and be about in this world. These scriptures can't help but fire us up for Jesus says "I came to bring fire to the earth and how I wish it were already kindled!" The summer has been a bit on the cooler side, but this Sunday will warm your soul from top to bottom and get you fired up for the fall.

Honour God With Thanksgiving

Isaiah 1:1, 10-20 Don't be hypocrites; work for justice.
Psalm 50:1-8, 22-23 (VU p. 775) The heavens proclaim God's justice.
Hebrews 11:1-3, 8-16 Faith is the assurance of things hoped for.

The idea of animal sacrifice in today's society as a peace offering to God seems absurd and an ancient practice best left in the past. But what do we offer to God instead? How do we engage God and continue to deepen our relationship? Is our present worship practice acceptable in God's eyes? Are we living in accordance with God's plan and mission in the world? Has our faith transformed us and how do we know?

Making Sense of Life

  • Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14, 2:18-23 Vanity of vanities
  • Psalm 49:1-12 The folly of riches
  • Luke 12:13-21 Parable of the rich fool

Making Sense of Life
At first we accept the world as sensible and Jesus life does not make sense. But as we hear the gospel and come to know Jesus, we come to see true wisdom in his life, and the foolishness of the world. In what ways has the world stopped making sense for you? How have you learned to recognize the wisdom in Jesus life and teachings?
