Crucified Messiah

Scripture:

  • Acts 2:22-32 . Peter's Pentecost address, part 2
  • Psalm 16 . You will not abandon my soul
  • 1 Corinthians 1:20-25 . The wisdom of the cross

Sermon:

Crucified Messiah
What is our sense of Covenant with God: the promise of life or the purpose and potential of life? And how do we experience it gained through being lost? How is "the foolishness of God" wiser than men, and "weakness of God" stronger than men? Here is the paradox of Sacred Wisdom at the very core of the Gospel in its earliest form.

Sowing seeds in our neighbourhood with abundance

Genesis 25:19-34 Esau and Jacob
Matthew 13:1-9, 18-23 Parable of the sower

Tom Long writes: "The Church is called to 'waste itself' to throw grace around like there is no tomorrow." The parable of the sower calls us to stop over thinking, and over planning, and procrastinating and simply start scatters seeds of love and acceptance in our neighbourhood. We need to take our statement of welcome and inclusion into our neighbourhood, without seeking reward for our toil, and not as a clever device on getting what we think we need, i.e. more butts in the pews. It is time to throw caution to the wind and see where the seeds fall and witness God at work amongst us.

Don't Panic!

Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28 Joseph is sold by his brothers
Matthew 14:22-33 Jesus walks on water

There are times in our life when we take risks for all the right reasons and as we follow that choice we become overwhelmed and then we panic, leaving us with that sinking feeling. Well this literally happens to Peter when he responds to Jesus's command to "Come." The good news rests in Jesus words, "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid." Like Peter, Joseph finds himself in an uncomfortable situation where all hope seems to be lost.but that is never the end of the story when it comes to God.listen view

The Church in the Power of the Holy Spirit

Scripture:

  • Acts 5:34-42 . Gamaliel's Intervention

Sermon:

The Church in the Power of the Holy Spirit
Wherein does the Church persist? Throughout history, there has been so much that was so unlikely: the call of Abraham, the Exodus, David's reign, Israel's return from exile. The Church looked unlikely to survive as well. Yet it did, not by human agency, but by the Power of the Holy Spirit. And even today, this is the only power by which the church persists.
