Spirit of Truth

Luke 4:16-21 • Spirit of the Lord is upon me

John 15:26—16:15 • When the Helper comes

We see the trinity when Jesus talks of the “Father” and the “Spirit.” This is the living trinity, unencumbered by dogmatic formulation. The problem with the “doctrine of the Trinity” is not that there is a formulation, but the insistence that there be only on formulation—there are may ways to speak of these holy three. And yet perhaps the best way is through stories, such as these, of the living trinity.

The Look of Church

Acts 2:1-4 . God pours the Spirit into our hearts

Galatians 4:1-7 . God sent his Son

Galatians 5:16-26 . Fruits of the Spirit

The season of Pentecost calls us to focus on living the Christ-life together. The look of the church in its inception and the look of the church today has drastically changed and transformed and yet we continue to struggle with similar issues as reflected in the writings of Paul. Paul desires Christians to live in community not only with each other, but with their neighbours. Paul reminds us that in doing this, we are not meant to sacrifice ourselves, "take care that you are not consumed by one another" but rather we are called to live by the Spirit. What does this look like for the church of today?

Together for the Journey

Galatians 3:1-9 • By faith or works of the law?

Galatians 3:23-29 • All one in Christ Jesus

Evolution and Diversity: Paul describes the life in Christ as an evolutionary step beyond law. One that is nevertheless inherent in the ancient beginnings of their tradition, it is also an idea whose time has come. And he focuses his discussion on the transcendence of differences -- here is a centre of unity that enables the broadest possible diversity within the fellowship of faith.

Christ Who Lives in Me

Galatians 1:13-17 • Preaching him among the Gentiles

Galatians 2:11-21 • Crucified with Christ

Think of all the wonderful ways we discover something new within ourselves. Christ lives in me. In crisis, one discovers unknown strength. One finds an altruistic love drawn forth by a view of suffering. Artistic inspiration comes at times unbidden, as of the muse, from far beyond us. One's ego breaks and then the heart is filled with a peace never known before.

Can I do that?

Acts 15: 1-17 . Council at Jerusalem; Faith Gives identity to both Jews and Gentiles
Stewardship is about sharing our times, treasures and talents and participating in the ministry and mission of the body of Christ. We are told today that no matter where you have come from, and in the case of the time of Paul and Barnabas it doesn't matter whether you are a Gentile or a Jew, for God knows the human heart and every fellow has received the Holy Spirit, all their hearts have been cleansed by faith, not by upholding the law. Find one's place within the body of Christ may seem overwhelming, AND yet it is as simple as asking what can I do? This was a Whole Family Worship and thus there is no recorded sermon time. It was a dramatic story with ritual annointing.
